I've been a creative person all my life. My creative journey has taken me through painting and illustration, poetry, music, singing, writing, filmmaking, and storytelling.

The first thing I have to say about all of this is that I started with plenty of creative blocks myself! In fact, at one time or another, I’ve felt blocked in every area I just mentioned.

I’ve learned that creativity isn’t simply about liking to make things. It can also be about looking within and discovering what may be wanting to emerge.

What do I mean by that? I believe we are more than we know, and that each of us has gifts we may not even recognize. We may have forgotten the things we once loved to do, or dismissed abilities that came easily to us because they didn’t seem important. But those gifts and talents can still be there, waiting to be called back into our lives.

As a Creativity Coach, I help people become more aware of those impulses and move through the inner blocks that may be keeping them hidden.

It can take some courage—and sometimes some guidance—to bring what’s inside to the outside. But in my experience, there is so much good and beauty inside every one of us, along with creative ways of looking at things that we may not even know are there.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)-Informed Creativity Coaching

When working with clients, I may use an IFS-informed approach to help you become curious about the different parts of yourself that show up around creativity—for example, the critic, the perfectionist, the hesitant one, the one that may have shut down, the one that would simply like to have more fun in life, and so on.

Rather than trying to silence those parts because they may seem inconvenient or difficult to spend time with, we can become curious about them. And there can be a real payoff to that curiosity.

What might they be trying to tell you?

We are all a little different, of course, but I can tell you this: what we discover can be surprisingly heartwarming.

And here’s something that feels especially practical and timely: As our world changes, our own creativity becomes even more important.

In a world in which machines can produce more and more things that look creative, becoming acquainted with the source of our own creativity becomes more—not less—valuable.

Perhaps the question isn’t how to compete with AI, but how to become more deeply connected to the source of our own creativity—which, in my experience, goes far beyond what AI can do.

Here are some questions: What are you drawn to, even when it doesn’t seem practical? What ideas keep returning? What do you find yourself wanting to make, understand, or explore simply because something in you says, “This matters”?

These impulses may be pointing toward gifts that are uniquely yours. And as you begin to recognize and follow them, you may discover possibilities you hadn’t considered before—for personal fulfillment, meaningful work, or even a new or added direction in your livelihood.
